Four ways to make artwork
POD artwork can be drawn or photographed from scratch, assembled from licensed assets, generated with AI, or made through a hybrid process. The method should follow the brief. Typography-heavy designs demand exact text control; portraits demand identity fidelity; seamless patterns demand repeat integrity; vintage graphics demand convincing texture at print size.
Clutch's 2026 business-design survey supports the narrower conclusion that AI tools are present in design workflows and simple repetitive tasks are more exposed to automation. It is not a POD-seller sample and does not measure print quality. [Clutch, 2026]
For every method, keep source and license records and preserve an editable master.
Generate toward a specification
Write the prompt or Skill input as an art-direction brief: subject, composition, viewpoint, medium, palette, background behavior, exclusions, and intended product. Generate a small set of meaningfully different candidates, then select against the brief. More outputs do not compensate for unclear criteria.
Do not ask an image model to finalize exact names, dates, prices, or legal copy. Add controlled text during editing.
Editing is part of creation
Inspect hands, faces, letterforms, repeated motifs, edges, shadows, and small decorative forms. Remove accidental objects and visual noise. Rebuild text, adjust hierarchy, separate the subject cleanly, and correct color or contrast for the chosen material.
Plotia's production evidence review separates two claims: an AI image can become a useful print input; an AI output is automatically print-ready. Public cases support the first, not the second as a general promise. [Plotia Research, 2026]
Zoom out to physical size as well as in to pixel level. Details that look impressive enlarged may become mud in print.
Use a hybrid master workflow
A practical sequence is: brief, generate or source components, select, composite, redraw critical forms, typeset exact copy, run cleanup, adapt to the product template, and export from a layered master. Save the chosen generation and the edited master as different assets.
Hybrid work is often more reliable because it uses AI for exploration while reserving precision for tools and stages that can guarantee it.
